This aircraft depicts a Tempest Mk.V, Serial No.JN743,
code SA-V, of No. 486 (NZ) Squadron, Tangmere, 21/1/44 to 28/2/44. The pilot
was F/L Francis Murphy, OBE, DFC, from Wellington, New Zealand. For this short
period, the Squadron received 5 Tempest V's which were later passed on to No.3
Squadron. On 3rd February three of the five Tempests V flew into a flock of
birds at Tangmere and were out of action for the rest of the month. While it
remains unclear, it is said that this incident was the reason why No.3 Squadron
was first fully re-eqipped with the new airplanes, and not No.486. This
particular plane survived the war only to be sold for scrap in July
1947. This aircraft was created by Stanley99, and incorporates the combined works of
Ghostboy, Migge and Dan
Shaw. The readme file credits all those involved in the creation of
this aircraft. (TEMP slot) |

This aircraft depicts a Tempest Mk.V, Serial No.JN793,
code RN-T, of No.72 Squadron, in North Africa. Tis is a totally fictional
colour scheme as the Tempest Mk.V never actually saw action in North Africa.
However No.72 Squadron did, but with Spitfires. The serial is from a Tempest
which served in No.486 and No.3 Squadrons for half a year.
This
aircraft was created by Stanley99, and

down with this aircraft, which was flown by several pilots. Eventually, this
aircraft was hit by flak near Huissen on 11th October '44 and force-landed NW
of Nijmegen. The pilot, F/L Eric Tanner from Tauranga, New Zealand, was unhurt
(he survived the war and died 15/11/84). Last base of this plane was
Grimbergen, Belgium. This aircraft was created by Stanley99, and incorporates the combined works of

This aircraft depicts a Tempest Mk.V, Serial No.JN854,
code SA-G, of No.486 (NZ) Squadron, Newchurch, 25/6/44 to 5/7/44. 6 1/2 V-1's
were shot down with this plane. Not the regular aircraft of any particular
pilot, there were at least 6 who flew it. However on the 5th of July the plane
was piloted by W/O Cornelieus Sheddan of Waimate, New Zealand, when the air
intake took in a spent shell (Sheddan shot down a V-1) and the plane
crash-landed and exploded at Netherfield. Sheddan was seriously injured in the
incident, but recovered. On 2nd May 1945, S/L Sheddan took command of the
Squadron until it's disbandment in October 1945. This aircraft was created
by Stanley99, and incorporates the combined
works of Ghostboy, Migge and Dan
Shaw. The readme file credits all those involved in the creation of
this aircraft. (TEMP slot) |
