to the 27 Feb 1944. This aircraft was flown by Capt. Cornelius "Corky"
Marcellus Smith Jr., who became an ace on the 24th October 1943 and had scored

This is the Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft of Capt. George
Welch, 80th FS, 8th Fighter Group during June 1943. On June 21, 1943, he
destroyed two Zeros over Lae, then, two months later, he downed three Ki-61
'Tony' fighters near Wewak. Promoted to Captain, Welch was moved to 8th Fighter
Group Headquarters. His biggest day since Pearl Harbor came on September the
2nd, 1943, when he shot down three more aircraft (Zeros or Ki-43 Hayabusa
'Oscar) and a "Dinah" bomber.
