This is a Grumman F4F Wildcat, Coded GF-29-12, operating with VGF-29 from from the USS Santee (off Safi) during Operation Torch, November 1942. VGF-29 was commanded by LCdr Tom Blackburn, who later commanded the famous VF-17 Jolly Roger squadron of F4U Corsairs.

This aircraft depicts a Lockheed P38M-LO Lightning 'Night Fighter'. In 1943 trials were made for a night fighter version of the P38. The P38L was used as the starting point for the conversion of 76 aircraft. They were fitted with APS-6 radar, which was operated by the radar observer sitting in the rear.

This Lockheed Lightning P-38J-10-LO of the 428 Fighter Squadron, 474 Fighter Group, 9th Airforce, was based at RAF Warmwell from the March 13, 1944 to August 11th, 1944, when they were moved to France.

This is one of only two Lockheed P38J's allocated to the 80th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group, based at Dobodura, New Guinea: 11 Dec 1943 to the 27 Feb 1944. This aircraft was flown by Capt. Cornelius "Corky" Marcellus Smith Jr., who became an ace on the 24th October 1943 and had scored 11 victories by the end of the year.

This is the Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft of Capt. George Welch, 80th FS, 8th Fighter Group during June 1943. On June 21, 1943, he destroyed two Zeros over Lae, then, two months later, he downed three Ki-61 'Tony' fighters near Wewak. Promoted to Captain, Welch was moved to 8th Fighter Group Headquarters. His biggest day since Pearl Harbor came on September the 2nd, 1943, when he shot down three more aircraft (Zeros or Ki-43 Hayabusa 'Oscar) and a "Dinah" bomber.
