This 'New Guinea' campaign (Version 1.1) is an add-on campaign for
European Air War. It covers the Papuan campaign in New Guinea from July 1942 to
January 1943. 'Preparations for the Guadalcanal campaign cut deeply into the
flow of men and planes to Australia and New Guinea. The Japanese continued to
press their New Guinea ground offensive in the summer of 1942 in the direction
of Port Moresby, while Australian infantrymen fought a desperate holding
action. Not only were Allied ground forces restricted by shortages of personnel
and equipment, but Allied airpower was also forced into a holding and defensive
role. It was the mission of American fighter units to defend Port Moresby as
best they could and to participate in limited escort and ground-support duties.
As the Guadalcanal campaign progressed, the role of Allied ground forces and
air units became more and more important, for the approaches to Australia had
to be held or the costly campaign in the Solomons would have gone for naught.'
