P51D Mustang to be Called "Big Beautiful Doll" flown by
John David Landers. The plane was allocated to him in the last week of May
1944, and was immediately painted with D-Day stripes for the impending
invasion. Later these invasion stripes were removed from the plane, as is
depicted here with this version. During this transitional period from P38's to
P51's, the old style coding meant that no serial numbers were visible on the
tail, and being the first allocation of the new bubble canopy 'D' models, they
kept the old tyle P51B tail without the doral fin support of later models.(P-51D Slot). Created by Col.

P51D Mustang, "Big Beautiful Doll", of Colonel John
Landers, O.C. 78th FG, during May 1945. Col. Landers was one of a handful of
pilots who scored victories in both the Pacific and European theatres. "Big
Beautiful Doll" was the sobriquet applied to a series of P51 Mustangs, flown by
Col. Landers. He is credited with the destruction of 14.5 aircraft in air to
air combat, with a further 20 aircraft destroyed on the ground. This version of
the 'Doll' is the best known, and most widely recognised of the P51's given the
name, and is the second of 4 different paint jobs recieved by this
aircraft.(P-51D Slot). Created by Col.

Possibly the last chequered nose version of the P51D
Mustang to be Called "Big Beautiful Doll" flown by Colonel John David Landers.
Best known for his B&W checkered nose aircraft, this plane could have been
the 3rd checker nose to bare the name.(P-51D

P51D represents the third major paint job of the first P51D
allocated to John Landers, that was named 'Big Beautiful Doll'. Both John
Landers and the plane were transfered from the 38thFS to the 363rd in late Sept
'44. As a result she was repainted with a new red and yellow chequered nose,
and red rudder. The cockpit canopy also included a new motif that read -
'Pilot - Lt.Col.J.D.Landers' - due to his promotion just prior to
arrival. It also includes a revised score tally. This was the only 'Big
Beautiful Doll' to be lost in combat, whilst being flown by Lt.Wendell. T.
Helvig (KIA) on Christmas Eve 1944.(P-51D

first chequered nose P51D to bear the name 'Big Beautiful
Doll'. This plane was issued to, the then, Lt.Col.J.D.Landers, some three
months prior to his promotion. He took charge of the plane at the same time he
took charge of the 78th FG as CO. This plane had 3 upgrades in colour
scheme.(P-51D Slot). Created by Col.

P-51D Mustang skin of the last, and lesser known version
of, the 'Big Beautiful Doll' flown by Col.J.D.Landers, 361st FG, 375th FS. The
plane saw only the shortest of "combat periods", just a few weeks prior to the
end of all hostilities. As one of the best interdiction pilots of the war, he
trained his new Sqdn with superb results, but in the end they weren't needed as
VJ -Day came swiftly, just prior to their scheduled departure to the PTO.
However, I think it is a very clean, attractive, and sharp looking aircraft
from all those that took the name 'Big Beautiful Doll'.(P-51D Slot). Created by Col. Landers |
