Typhoon IB, serial MP126, code ZY-Y, 247 Squadron RAF, December '44, based at Eindhoven. Flown by S/L B. G. Stapleton.

Following is RedEyes' info about this plane:

"ZYY flown by Squadron Leader B. G. Stapleton (a Battle of Britain Ace), according to the Osprey book I have, flew this Typhoon out of Eindhoven in December 1944. He had just taken command of the unit (247 Squadron) earlier in the month. The plane was borrowed by a Dutch pilot, Plt Off Fricky Wiersum who was downed by flak on 12/5/44 near Rhede. He managed to make a forced landing behind the lines, where his captors showed great interest in the "arty painting in front of the canopy" which had been created by the squadron intelligence officer, Flg Off Kay. It is a cool piece of art, some sort-of flaming German eagle on a swastika emblem thingie..."
