1n 1942, the third XF6F was fitted with the 18-cylinder P&W 2800 radial engine with a turbo-supercharger with a 4 bladed prop and designated XF6F-2. The turbocharger was an unproven design from Birmann and was unsuccessful. The engineers would have been far ahead if they had copied the installation of the GE turbocharger used in the P-47.

The new engine produced 1850 HP at 34,000 feet while the standard engine produced 1500 HP at 26,000 ft.

Projected top speed was 412 MPH at 34,000 feet.
