In early 1944 two F6F-5s were fitted with the 18-cylinder 2,100 hp Pratt and Whitney R-2800-18W two-stage blower radial engine which was used by the F4U-4 Corsair. The new Hellcat variant was fitted with a four-bladed propeller and was called the XF6F-6. The aircraft proved to perform better than the F4U-4 in many respects except top speed which was 423 MPH at 25,000 feet.

Another improvement in the F6F-6 was the availability of more potent armament than the standard six .50 caliber Mgs. This consisted of a 4 Hispano 20 mm cannon carrying 220 rounds each.

The creators of the original model used as a base are:

Captain Kurt, Claudio Wilches, George (Geo) Lekko and Steven Day.The cockpit is from Col. Gibbon's F4F model
