'Jake' history courtesy of Capt. Kurt
The Jake was the standard Imperial Japanse Navy warship based floatplane during
the Pacific War. It operated from heavy cruisers, battleships and also from seaplane
tenders.
The Jake did not always operate in lone reconnaissance duties. Many were
assigned to squadrons for patrol and anti-submarine duties, based along the coasts
of both islands and Japan itself on board seaplane tenders.
They even occasionally performed attack or bombardement duties.
It remained a relatively anonymous aircraft but had been everywhere above the Pacific
during the war. It was popular with its crews.
It first experienced combat above China in the autumn of 1941 and took part in the
attack against Pearl Harbor (performing a reconnaissance prior to the attack itself).
It was still under production when the war ended.
