Hurricane Mk1 ALK (P2798) of N87 Squadron RAF as flown by Squadron Leader Ian. R. Gleed during Winter 1940-1941. 15 kills 266 & 87Sq, Middle Wallop Wing, Ibsley Wing, 145Sq, 244 Wing; KIA 16/Apr/1943

When The Blitz began in October 1940, England had virtually no night defenses. In the face of this, it was decided to try an operate Spitfires and Hurricanes at night, in an attempt to catch the German bombers in the searchlights over their targets. The Germans would later call this the "Wilde Sau" and put it to use over Germany. Pilots quickly discovered that the Hurricane, with its wider gear and ability to take a hard landing without injury better than the more dainty Spitfire, was the better aircraft for this duty. 87 Squadron became a dedicated night unit and flew against the Germans throughout the height of the Blitz through the winter of 1940-41.
With the lack of success on the part of the single-seaters against German aircraft over England, Gleed was on of the first to come up with the idea of going where the Germans were: flying a fighter over German air bases, to shoot down bombers on take off or landing, when they were most vulnerable, and when a loss in view of the rest of the unit would have the maximum morale value. 87 Sqn. moved from night defense to night offense in the Spring of 1941.
