Spitfire VIII, probably A58-435 with 452 Squadron flown by 5+ victory 'ace' Flt Lt W Cundy at Sattler, Northern Territory, mid 1944. By this stage of the war the Northern Territory had become an operational 'back-water', a far cry from the intense aerial combat Cundy experienced while serving in the Western Desert.

The aircraft was probably delivered to the RAAF wearing RAF 'desert' camouflage, Dark earth, Middle stone with Azure blue undersides. It appears to have been re-painted with RAAF Foliage green on the upper surface and retained its Azure blue undersides. Codes were either white or faded Sky blue and probably read as QY-T on the starboard side plus an 8" high black 'T' under the spinner. All roundels were 32 inches in diameter. The white leading edge had a narrow taper on the upper surface of the wing and most likely a 'straight' edge on the underside.

Forward of the cockpit is a white version of Vacuum Oil Inc.'s (later Socony Vacuum, Socony Mobil and today the Mobil Corporation) red Pegasus logo. The Australian subsidiary Vacuum Oil Pty Ltd, introduced Australian consumers to the corporate logo in 1939. Although the emblem is obviously based on the Vacuum Oil logo this is not a 'presentation aircraft'.

According to Ancient Greece mythology, Pegasus was a winged horse who arose from the blood of Medusa after Perseus cut off her head.
