80 Squadron was based in Egypt from May 1938 to November 1940.
June 1939 to February 1941.  The squadron then moved to Greece and served there until April 1941, flying from Eleusis,Trikkala and Yannina.

Several of the squadron's Gladiators were passes on to 21 Mira, Royal Hellenic Air Force.

While fighting in Greece, the squadron's aircraft were marked with individal identity letters, but not the 2 letter squadron code (which was YK).

The squadron's most famous pilot was the South African Squadron Leader Marmaduke Thomas St John Pat Pattle (DFC and Bar).  He is thought by some to have been the RAF's leading ace of World War 2 with over 50 victories, although not all of them were officialy confirmed.
