THE FILES
The files in this zip file are:
ECAPNL41.TXT
ECAPANEL.EXE
ECAPANEL.DAT

INSTALLATION
Put these three files into your EAW directory (typically C:\Programs\Microprose Software\European Air War). Your "EAW directory" is the directory with EAW.EXE in it. It is essential that ECAPANEL.EXE and ECAPANEL.DAT be in your EAW directory, and run from that directory, for ECA Control Panel to function.

Then just click on ECAPANEL.EXE in Explorer or File Manager, or create a shortcut for it on your desktop and click on that. You must run ECAPANEL.EXE in your EAW directory, and ECAPANEL.DAT must also be in that directory.

ECAPanel is written in Visual Basic 3, and requires three standard Microsoft VB system files to operate. These files are VBRUN300.DLL, COMMDLG.DLL and CMDIALOG.VBX. These are standard Microsoft Visual Basic files, which you may already have in your Windows\System directory. If you have used any previous version of ECAPanel, or any other VB3 program, these files will already be in your Windows\System directory. If you do not have these files in your Windows\System directory, you will need to download them. I have packaged them on my site, in a file VBSysFiles.zip (282 Kb), or you can get them from Microsoft.

Select the aircraft you want to fly, and fly against, and exit. The selected aircraft will be substituted for the corresponding original ones when you restart EAW, and saved in ECA Control Panel. When you start ECA Control Panel at any later time your previously selected aircraft options will be displayed. Choose "Reset" (under "File") to restore the original ECA aircraft at any time.

ECAPANEL makes no changes to your EAW files. EAW has its data in a series of compressed data files (*.CDF in your EAW directory), but it reads relevant individual files that it finds in the same directory first, before looking in one of the CDF files (sort of like you looking for something on your desk before looking in your filing cabinet - if you find it on your desk you look no further). The files in "Enemy Coast Ahead" and the ECA Control Panel will make no changes to your EAW files, and and the patch is thus completely reversible. To undo this patch, simply delete the files set out above.

To fully delete ECA and ECA Control Panel, and return EAW to its original state, delete all of the following files from your EAW directory:

THE WAY IT WORKS: AIRCRAFT
EAW has limit of 30 aircraft, 20 of which were originally flyable. With ECA, an additional 7 of the non-flyable aircraft are now flyable (although those only in campaigns).

ECAPANEL enables easy swapping of aircraft models within the 30-aircraft limit. Each new aircraft model will fly as it should, and is armed as it was. Change the P51B to the RAF Mustang IA, with its 4x20mm cannon, to fly or fly against. Try the A26B Invader with its 14x0.50 cal MGs, the Fw190A8/R1 with its 6x20mm cannon, or the Ju87G Stuka with its 2x37mm anti-tank cannon. Fly Russian machines in lieu of British ones, or Japanese ones in lieu of German ones. Some of the available aircraft, such as the Hawker Sea Fury, Hornet Mk3, XP-72 and Gotha Go-229 are post-WWII machines or experimental models that did not reach production before the end of WWII, but might have. They are included for interest, and also for post-1945 campaigns.

A couple of the changes are nominal only, but most are substantial, with changes (sometimes extensive) to flight models, armour levels, weapons and ordnance loads. Underwing cannon tubs, such as the Bf109G6 and Fw190A8 carried, now bring a real flight performance penalty. There are also many subtle historical ordnance changes (e.g. the Bf109E7 was fitted carry a bombload where the E3 and and E4 could not, and had improved pilot armour; the Hurricane II could carry rockets, unlike the Mk I, etc) to be discovered.

There are some small idiosyncrasies in the "in-flight" weapons messages (an EAW limitation) which do not affect the weapons actually loaded. For example, selecting the Ju87G with its 37mm cannon will cause a change in the text string for the German 30mm to read 37mm. If then, for example, you fly the Me262, the in-flight message will tell you that you have 4x37mm cannon. This is a text error only - the Me262 still has 30mm cannon. Simply running ECA Control Panel and hitting "Reset" will put the text strings back to their original state. If you have a non-English-language version on EAW, you can delete RADIOTXT.STR from your EAW directory after running ECAPANEL to return your in-flight messages to your original language - you will just not have the correct in-flight message when you select the new heavy cannon. EAW is not really designed to utilize weapons larger than 30mm, and the new heavy-calibre weapons (37mm, 40mm, 50mm and 57mm) all required some work-arounds to function. They work quite well (albeit only with the 30mm sound), but you will find that because of their low rate of fire, they are better for ground attack than air-to-air work. Another very small limitation is that EAW only displays gun-flashes, smoke and ejected shells from three blocks each of four pilot-controlled guns, and will not give a meaningful in-flight text string for more than 8 guns in either the nose or wing position. This is only a problem with the A26 Invader, Hurricane IIb and the Typhoon 1a, where the gun flashes and the text strings respectively will not precisely correspond to the guns actually carried. Some aircraft without forward-firing pilot-operable guns (Arado 234, Potez 630, Defiant, Kate and Jill) had to have some non-historical weapons fitted to enable them to work properly in EAW.

THE WAY IT WORKS: PLACE NAMES
ECAPANEL (as of v3.0) has a Place Names function, under "File". It has 4 options, "Europe", "Pacific", "Russia", and "North Africa". The "Europe" option gives you the default EAW Western European place names and default years of operations (1940, 1943, 1944 and 1945). The "Pacific", "Russia" and "North Africa" options each change the names of every city, town and airfield in EAW (all 308 of them) to appropriate Pacific, Eastern European, or Mediterranean ones, plus change the default years of operation (to 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945).

The Place Names options are achieved by adding 3 new files to your EAW directory, DNAMES.STR, MISN40.DAT and TARNAMES.STR. DNAMES.STR allows single missions to be flown in 1942, rather than in 1940. MISN40.DAT permits the appropriate aircraft models to take part in 1942 missions. In the Pacific, for example, in 1942 you can fly the Hurricane, Kittyhawk IA, Spitfire I, II or V, P40E Warhawk, F4F Wildcat, P38F Lightning, B17D Fortress, Ki43 Oscar, A6M2 Zero, Ki45 Nick, Ki21 Sally and G4M2 Betty. In Russia it is the MiG3, LaGG3, La5, Il-4, Bf109E or F, Bf110C or F, Me210 etc.

The changes to TARNAMES.STR change the names of every city, town and airfield in EAW (all 308 of them) to an appropriate Pacific, Eastern European, or Mediterranean one. Note that there are no changes to the EAW map or positions of cities etc, so the geography bears no relationship to reality. It is just name changes, to give a flavour. For example, with the Pacific option selected, place names in Britain are changed to Pacific ones which were always under Allied control (Pearl Harbor, Darwin, Port Moresby etc), while place names in Germany are Japanese, Korean, Manchurian and Chinese. Together with JayP's Pacific island terrain, this helps to create a suitable "Pacific" feel to EAW missions. And likewise with the snow-covered Russian front terrain available for the Russian front place names option, and the North African terrain and place names.

THE WAY IT WORKS: SQUADRONS
ECAPANEL incorporates the EAW pilot career editor EAWPILOT, and you can move from one to the other simply by clicking on the menu items "Squadron Editor" and "Aircraft Editor" respectively. So you can select a model of aircraft (say, the Hurricane IV instead of the Hurricane I) with the Aircraft Editor, then assign that aircraft to your campaign squadron with the Squadron Editor. EAWPILOT also enables you to change such things as the names of your campaign Group and Squadron, your airbase, the numbers of available aircraft, the names and other attributes of your pilots, and the month and year. You can fly your campaign at any time between 1940 and 1950.

EAW pilot careers, or campaigns, are contained in files named CAREERxx.SVE (where xx is a two-digit number such as 00, 01, etc). These files are found in your EAW SAVEDATA directory (typically C:\PROGRAMS\MICROPROSE SOFTWARE\EUROPEAN AIR WAR\SAVEDATA).

EAWPILOT operates by amending these career files. When saving an amended file you can save under any name, but EAW will only recognise and use a file named CAREERxx.SVE that is in the SAVEDATA directory. You can change any of the variables displayed. You must "Open" a career file before you can make changes to it. To retain any changes you must "Save" it under its current name, or "Save As" a new name, before you "Exit".

THE WAY IT WORKS: VIEW DISTANCES
As of ECAPanel v4.0 I have aded a new feature, "View Distance". It is under "File" on the Menu Bar. This feature alters the figures for viewing all aircraft in EAW. The "Standard" setting uses the standard EAW figures. "High" doubles these figures, using the figures from Max188's Plane Rendering mod (http://www.xmission.com/~mmagleby/eaw). "Maximum" triples the standard EAW viewing distance figures. The effect of this is that the detailed "close-up" EAW 3D aircraft shapes and skins will be seen for much greater distances, which will have a major improved effect on aircraft visibility at all ranges. There may be a small frame-rate hit with the higher settings, especially with some of the newer shapes and skins, which will vary from one PC to another, so choose the setting that works best for your system.

THE WAY IT DOESN'T WORK: AIRCRAFT SHAPES AND COLOUR SCHEMES
ECA Control Panel does not make any changes to aircraft shapes or colour schemes, but since Microprose released PICPAC.EXE in August 1999 there have been many colour schemes created and made available on the Net for EAW aircraft. For example, you can now swap to a Mustang in an R.A.F. campaign with ECAPANEL, and use a P51 in RAF colours. With the recent (February 2000) conversion of aircraft shapes from Microprose' "1942 Pacific Air War", there is also a large number of Pacific theatre shapes now available. Most recently (April 2000), Paulo Morais has cracked the EAW 3D shape code, and amended-shape skins are now becoming available.

There are many websites from which aircraft skins and new 3D shapes are available. I cannot list all the skin websites now in existence, but most of these sites mentioned below have links to all or most of the other sites available. Perhaps the most extensive set of links to other EAW sites can be found at Sandbbagger's site (http://eawhostsite.0catch.com/home.html) or on the Links page of my site (http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/CharlesEAW/).

AIRCRAFT GUNS and AMMUNITION LOADS
The full list of all flyable aircraft model options now available, listed under the respective original aircraft, together with a brief description of maximum airspeed, guns and ammunition loads, is available from within ECAPanel under "Aircraft Data".

ECA CONTROL PANEL VERSION HISTORY
VERSION 1.0 (June 1999)
The first release version of ECA Control Panel.

VERSION 1.1 changes:
1. Corrected an error in the in-flight messages for the Mosquito guns, and corrected the Mosquito ammunition loads.
2. Corrected the MG17 ammunition load for the Bf109E3.
3. A major bug-fix, to correct the original Microprose error which made the left wing of all aircraft immune to gun-fire. The original EAW had the hit-box for the left wing superimposed over the right wing! This was why the right wing was always the one to break-up under fire, while the left wing was invulnerable. Now both wings are targets.
4. Fixed the Spitfire Ia and IIa guns (the "6 instead of "8" gun bug).
5. Finallly fixed the "bombers turning back" bug.

VERSION 1.2 changes:
1. Corrected a bug in the Spitfire Va routine, which caused an exit to Windows.
2. Changed the program title to read correctly, as version 1.2.
3. Added the Spitfire XIVc, with 4x20mm cannon.

VERSION 1.4 changes (October 1999):
1. This is not an error, there was no ECA Control Panel v1.3. I skipped a version number to bring ECA and ECA Control panel into step.
2. Version 1.4 makes a substantial change to aircraft damage levels, increasing them all by 50%. This is to reduce the greatly increased lethality of guns caused by the official Microprose EAW v1.2 patch.

VERSION 2.0 changes (December 1999):
1. This is not an error, I jumped from ECA Control Panel v1.4 to v2.0, to signify the major structural changes which have been made to the program.
2. All 30 EAW aircraft are now included in ECA Control Panel v2.0, so that (even for the non-flyable B17, B24 and V1) a number of different models can be selected for each.
3. Store and "Reset". All changes made by ECA Control Panel are now stored, and not reset automatically. The ECA default aircraft can be restored individually, or all at once by hitting "Reset".
4. The single-mission menus will now reflect the chosen aircraft options.
5. The Squadron Editor will now start by default in the standard Microprose SAVEDATA directory, not in the EAW directory.
6. Changes have been made to increase the stand-alone stability of ECA Control Panel. Basically, ECA Control Panel should now function with EAW, either with or without ECA installed (although if you do not have ECA installed, and use the Squadron Editor to select one of the aircraft that is non-flyable without ECA, EAW will crash when you try to fly a mission in that aircraft).
7. A whole host of Russian, Japanese and Italian aircraft options have been added, plus U.S Pacific war aircraft.
8. A small change has been made to correct the Fw190D-11 armament.
9. Combat slats have been added to the Bf109E, G and K, the Bf110C and G, and the Me262, and they will now function as energy fighters.

VERSION 3.0 changes (March 2000):
1. This is not an error, I jumped from ECA Control Panel v2.0 to v3.0, to signify a major function change, the place names option, which has been added to the program. The original Western European, plus Pacific, Russian front and North African places name options, are now available. There are also some "Global" selection options that have been added.
2. Added U.S. and Japanese aircraft the F4U-1, F4U-4, F4U-4C and F2G Corsairs, F4F-3 and F4F-4 Wildcat, P40E and P40N Warhawk, P39D Airacobra, TBD Devastator, SBD Dauntless, TBF Avenger, SB2C Helldiver, P61B Black Widow, B25B and B25J Mitchell, PBY-5A Catalina, the razorback P47D-23, Ki43 Oscar, Ki44 Tojo, N1K1-J and N1K2-J George, J2M3 Jack, Ki84 Frank, Ki46 Dinah, Ki21 Sally, Ki49 Helen, Q1W1 Lorna, G4M3 Betty, Ki67 Peggy, H6K4 Mavis, B5N2 Kate, B6N2 Jill and G8N1 Rita.
3. Added the Hawker Sea Fury Mk 10, Ilyushin Il-4, P39Q Airacobra, Heinkel He219, Morane-Saulnier MS.406 and Dewoitine D.520.
4. Corrected a small date problem in the squadron editor, and made a number of small changes to aircraft functions, armour levels, dates of first availability, and names.
5. Made a number of changes to aircraft nationality, and added the RAF B24 Liberator and B25 Mitchell.
6. Made a number of changes to aircraft names displayed in the sim.

VERSION 3.1 CHANGES
1. Corrected a typo in the "Global changes" menu.
2. Made a number of changes to gun flash points, to accord with the new 1942 Pacific Air War ("PAW") skins.
2. Fixed the operation of the landing gear on a number of aircraft, especially the new PAW ones, so that they retract and extend in the correct direction, and fixed the tricycle undercarriages on the Airacobras and the He219.
3. Resolved a difficulty with the display of some of the twin-engined PAW skins (B25, PBY, Betty and Mavis) at medium distance.
4. Added the Bf109E1, Bf109F2, Do 17Z and Do 217J, Beaufighter Mk IF, Tomahawk Mk IA and Kittyhawk Mk II.
5. Added the Me410A2 and Me410B6 as Bf110G alternatives, flyable in single missions.
6. Added the Dewoitine D.520 (Vichy Air Force) in the Bf109G slot.
7. Added a number of 1940-era aircraft, the French Caudron C.714, Curtiss Hawk 75A, Bloch MB 152, Potez 630 and Potez 631, and Amiot 354 B4, a "French (1940) Aircraft" global change option, and the Dutch Fokker G-1 Mercury.
8. Made a number of changes to flight models, especially the XP72, P47M, P47N, and F8F.
9. Fixed an AI problem with the Potez 630, Kate and Jill, by adding a (non-historical) pilot-operable nose MG.
10. Changed the Mosquito XVIII, Pe2 and Potez 630 to be bombers, rather than fighters, which can thus be escorted by R.A.F. or Armee de l'Air aircraft.

VERSION 3.2 CHANGES
1. Added an on-screen information routine, which gives maximum speed and weapons loads of all of the various aircraft options.
2. Added the Boulton-Paul Defiant MkI, Fairey Fulmar Mk II, Fairey Battle Mk I, Brewster F2A-2 Buffalo, Fiat BR.20M Cicogna bomber, Macchi C.205 N Orion interceptor, Nakajima Ki-27 Nate, Reggiane Re.2000, IAR-80b, Me163 Komet (and its Japanese counterpart, the Ki-200 Shusui), the Ta183A1 jet (a prototype only at the war's end, from which the MiG15 was developed), and the Bf109G14 (in the Bf109K slot).
3. Added a number of already-available aircraft, in alternative slots. The Spitfire Vb is now available in the Spitfire I slot (as well as in the Spitfire IX slot), and the Mosquito VI and Beaufighter MkIF are now available for single-missions in the P38H slot (as well as in the Mosquito slot). The Ju87B and Ju87G are also now available for single -missions, in the Bf109K slot.
4. Fixed an AI problem with the Defiant, by adding (non-historical) pilot-operable nose MGs.
5. Added underwing cannon pods to the Bf109F4/R1, G6/R4, G6/R6 and G10/R4, and twin-cannon pods to the Fw190A8/R1.
6. Added underwing cannon pods to the Ju87G. Note that Paulo Morais' new Ju87G 3D shape and skin files (PJU87F.3DZ, PJU87M.3DZ, PJU87P.3DZ, PJU87TES.TPC, PJU87TEX.TPC and PJU87TRA.TPC, which are available from Mosi's website: http://members.friendfactory.com/cmosi/index.htm) must be in your EAW directory for these additions to be visible.
7. Fixed an error in some of the "Global Changes" routines, which crept in when extra aircraft were added in v3.1.
8. Made some changes to a number of the flight models.

VERSION 3.3 CHANGES (July 2000)
1. Added the P63B Kingcobra, P80 Shooting Star, B29 Superfortress, Polikarpov I-16, Petlyakov Pe-8, Sukhoi Su-2, Il-2m3 Stormovik, Yakovlev Yak-4, Lancaster Mk I, Halifax Mk III, Bristol Blenheim Mk I, Blackburn Skua Mk II, Meteor Mk III, Fokker D-XXI, Me323V1 Gigant, J7W1 Shinden, B7A2 Grace and Breda Ba 65.
