Kittyhawk I. By Geg.
AK846 with 250 Squadron (RAF) flown by Flt. Lt. J Waddy (RAAF).
Western Desert, May 1942.
In a desperate attempt to quickly reinforce the 'Afrika Korps', formations of slow,
vulnerable Junkers Ju52 transports escorted by Bf110's would fly in troops and supplies
direct from Crete.
On the 12th of May, a formation of thirteen Ju52's with an escort of probably
two Bf110 were 'ambushed' en-route by five Beaufighters from 252 Squadron
and eight Kittyhawks from 250 Squadron.
In the ensuing slaughter, nine troop laden Ju52's were shot down into the sea,
two force landed on a beach and two got through unscathed.
Waddy had his most successful sortie of the war claiming two Ju52's and two Bf110's.
