Tomahawk IIB. By Geg.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Tomahawk IIB, AK498 with 250 Squadron (RAF)
Flown by Flt Lt CR Caldwell in the Western Desert, late 1941.
During this period Caldwell was starting to make a reputation
for himself as an aggressive, tenacious fighter pilot who
constantly practiced his gunnery by shooting at the shadow
his aircraft made over the flat featureless desert during the
late afternoon and early morning.
His devotion to gunnery practice helped him become the
highest scoring allied fighter pilot in the Western Desert
with 20.5 aerial victories by the time he left the Middle East in
May 1942.
This 'shadow shooting' technique was later adopted by the
RAF and RAAF as part of the fighter pilot training program.
