A Kittyhawk II (P-40L).By Geg.
FS400 with 3 Squadron, Malta, 1943.
3 Squadron used extensively the RR Merlin engined P-40 'F' and 'L' models.
In an attempt to improve altitude performance of the P-40E, Curtiss replaced the
Allison engine with a license built RR Merlin with a single stage supercharger.
This new model was designated P-40F or Kittyhawk II in RAF parlance.
The basic P-40E airframe was subsequently improved by extending the length
of the fuselage by 19 inches resulting in the P-40L model which was also given
the designation Kittyhawk II. In RAF service both models were equipped with the
standard Kittyhawk armament of 6 wing mounted Browning machine guns.
