Kittyhawk III (P-40K). By Geg.
On the 28th of October 1942, Squadron Leader 'Bobby' Gibbes shot down a
Bf 109F flying this Kittyhawk III (P-40K) to bring 3 Squadron 's tally of aerial
victories to 200. This milestone in the squadron's history was celebrated shortly
afterwards and Gibbes also recorded a 'wireless' interview for the BBC.
Post war analysis has revealed the squadron's record of enemy aircraft
destroyed in combat at the time was unknowingly inflated, in
reality Gibbes' victory was the 177th for the squadron.
FR305 was the only Kittyhawk III (P-40K) in the squadron at the time
of Gibbes' victory, the rest were Kittyhawk Ia's (P-40E).
Note the fin fillet and aerial array from fuselage spine to tail plane tips
and top portion of fin. This particular aircraft also had a second rear
view mirror added to the starboard side of the canopy framing.
