54 (RAAF) Squadron Spitfire VIII, A58-390 flown by Flt Lt F Meakin, Truscott Airfield, July 1944. This Squadron left its mark on the region claiming not only the first Spitfire 'kill' in the Pacific War but the last enemy aircraft destroyed over Australian Territory.

On the 20th of July a detachment of three Spitfire VIII's from 54 Squadron stationed at Truscott Airfield were scrambled to intercept a lone enemy aircraft. Two of the pilots, Flt Lt's D Gossland and Meakin caught and fired upon the Mitsubishi 'Dinah' reconaisance aircraft. Meakin scored hits on the enemy aircraft causing its starboard wing to break off before bursting into flames and crashing into the sea north of Truscott.

Truscott Airfield, named in honour of Squadron Leader K 'Bluey' Truscott, is located on the northern tip of Western Australia, one of the most isolated, inhospitable regions on the Australian mainland.

Upper camouflage colours displayed a low contrast, probably Foliage Green and a 'dark' shade of Dark Earth with Sky Blue on the undersides. Roundels were approximately 25" in diameter on fuselage and 32" on upper and underside of wing.

This was made on the great 3dz work of Col Gibbon. It includes a new spinner and retracting rear wheel.
Thanks also to Mike 'Sandbagger' Norris (MSC) for all his work in hosting all these files for the EAW community.
