    ********
EAW uses two types of compressed sounds, .SND and .WSD. Music files use a third type, re-named .WAV files, not dealt with here.
.WSD is used for hanger screens.
.SND is used in flight and for briefings. Gun sounds, explosions, engines, radio traffic, etc.
Most .SND files are in the following folders:
 4. ENGINE STARTS
 5. ENGINE RUNNING + IN FLIGHT

***HOW TO DO IT ****

  2. SOUND MODS (the fun part) Each hanger set is modded and ready.
   HANGER-WSD
   HANGER-WSD 2
   HANGER-WSD 3

To use:
While ready for the game, you may want specific numbers for the sounds. The ones already numbered may not fit your preferences, and are used as examples.

 a. --Find the hanger sound number you want from the EAW DEFAULT LIST (In the Mod Readme
 or below here)
The actual default sounds are in the Hanger .WAVs-Orig file.

  b. --Re-number them without the descriptions.
For example, you might want to convert--
  SND2800 Corsair SIREN-UGLY.WSD

  to SND2802.SND-flyby3-buzzy

Eliminate the description and re-number your sound file of choice so it becomes
  SND2802.WSD

  Copy into the game.

 c. --Use Jon NightCrawler's EAW sound utility hear each .WSD sound mod files .
(It can also be used to convert back to .wav files for listening anywhere)

 4. ENGINE STARTS
 5. ENGINE RUN + IN FLIGHT
 6. GEAR, FLAPS, ETC.

To use:
Pick ONE of each number with the .SND extension
 Eliminate the description.
  SND0035.SND-P-40-IN-FLIGHT.SND becomes
SND0035.SND (---NOT SND0035.SND.SND, though it will work)
 Copy into the game.

You can re-number the sounds. EAW uses one of each type. The protocol is:
  SND0030.SND --Rotary engine start
SND0031.SND --Rotary engine run in flight
  SND0034.SND --In-line engine start
SND0035.SND --In-line engine run in flight
SND0042.SND --Light bomber or twin engine in flight
SND0043.SND --Heavy bomber, multi-engine in flight
  SND0050.SND --Landing gear up /down
SND0052.SND --Tire chirp on runway (not modded here)

You don't have to stick with protocol, of course.
The .WAV sounds are there for your use in making mods of your own with a sound editor.
They can be converted to .SND files with NCRAWLER's EAW Sound Utility if you like. Or even WSD for use in the hanger.

Sound Files By Nationality:
 7. AMERICAN AIRCRAFT
 8. BRITISH AIRCRAFT
 9. GERMAN & ITALIAN AIRCRAFT
 10. RUSSIAN AIRCRAFT
 11. JAPANESE AIRCRAFT

These are general sound files for modder use in sound editors. Most are fly-bys.

To use:

 a. --Find the hanger sound number you want from the EAW DEFAULT LIST or Original WAV files See each country's Readme file.
The actual default sounds are in the Hanger .WAVs-Original file, converted from .WSD

 b. --Use NCRAWLER's EAW Sound Utility to convert the .WAV file back to .WSD format, using the number of the file you want to replace.
For example, you might want to convert:

  F4U Corsair flyby.wav
  to SND2802-flyby3-buzzy

Use the sound utility to convert the F4U sound to WSD. format. Eliminate the description and list it as:
  SND2802.WSD

  Copy into the game.

 c. Or, you can use a sound editor to mix and match various sounds and make your own hanger file.
I recommend this, since the sounds here are often truncated (cut short) on fly-bys.
It takes some skill to extend the sounds out in a realistic way.
Remember: any one hanger file may be used by SEVERAL AIRCRAFT.
So choose your .WSD number carefully, since it may be repeated many times.
  Then do as above.

For sound editing I recommend Goldwave, which handles most sound files.
(It does not handle Real Audio, though. You can copy Real Audio with Windows Sound Recorder
or other utilities. Start the recorder, then start the audio playing. Save the file.).

    MORE DETAILS--

1. NCRAWLER's EAW Sound Utility.
Most useful thing here. Create your own sounds with a sound editor and convert them with this.
Unzip it and try the .exe. If not working, use the "install" option.
Jon's wonderful utility should work in most Windows platforms, though designed for XP.
(There is a .SND to .RAW conversion program, but Jon's sound utility is easier to use)
It will convert .wav files to EAW-type .wsd (hangers) and .snd (game sounds and inflight radio) and back. You can re-name the files as well.
Allows you to listen to any of those sounds--and is faster than any other program.
*It will NOT handle "compressed" .wav files from the Internet or Real Audio files. Gives error message--no harm done.
These must be converted to regular wav files with a sound editor.
Install it anywhere convenient for you.

2. HANGER MOD SOUND SETS

2-1 Hangershangerswsd.zip
2-2 Hangershangerswsd.zip
2-3 Hangershangerswsd.zip

The sound files inside must be re-numbered for specific sound slots.
Contains authentic sounds and sometimes added voices. Hanger operations become fun to listen to.
Hanger Mods Sounds Readme will list as many numbered sounds as is known for each aircraft slot.
You will decide what numbers to give the hanger sounds. Examples are provided.

3. ORIGINAL IN-GAME HANGER SOUNDS ( Hanger-WAV ORIG folder)

The list is above. Any Windows sound player or editor can be used to listen.

4. ENGINE START --Pick your favorite to use in game flying. For take-offs and landing.
5. ENGINE RUN +IN FLIGHT ---Running sounds while flying. Some are for hanger use.
6. GEAR, FLAPS, ETC. ---Also for take-offs and landings. Some extra sounds.

Contains .snd files for engine start, undercarriage (landing gear) and flying ready to be placed directly in the game. Just eliminate the titles.

AIRCRAFT SOUND SETS BY COUNTRY

7. AMERICAN
8. ENGLISH
9. GERMAN
10. RUSSIAN
11. JAPANESE

Contains authentic fly-overs, diving, idling sounds where I could find them. Check the readme for each.

12. MISCELLANEOUS

Sounds that do not fit elsewhere. Some of these are "non-authentic" sounds not tied to known aircraft, but still useful.
For space reasons, V-1 "Flying Bomb", V-2 rocket are included instead of in German file.
Biplanes, and the "Spruce Goose" are there.

Most, but not all sounds in this mod are authentic---that is, they were taken from actual recordings of fly-overs, taxi, run-ups, etc. Spliced and edited ones used these authentic sounds with others to create something as real as possible. Other EAW sound packs are available through Tally-Ho at Sandbagger's site.

******SOURCES AND THANKS TO:

Our own EAW modder, Col. Gibbon for the "borrowed" Lancaster and the actual British Bomber crew radio recording during a WWII flight to Berlin (included for convenience and completeness).

While researching this mod, Moggy, RAF_Dumoulin, Huntress, Pobs, Crashin' Jack, Huntress and VonBeerhofen were helpul. And thanks to Sandbagger for hosting. Col. Gibbon is at fault for innocently asking if "someone" would convert some sounds for EAW use, so his sound pack deserved to be looted.
