Background: 
This was the first monoplane fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy. It was a cantilever monoplane with fixed landing gear, open cockpit (the pilots rejected a closed one),and one of the first all-metal stressed-skin aircraft built in Japan. The A5M performed well throughout the Sino-Japanese war,and against the USSR, where it demonstrated excellent speed and maneuverability. Over Nanking in December 1937, A5M pilots destroyed ten Chinese I-16B fighters for no Japanese loss. in the wars against China  and was still the numerically most important Navy fighter in 1941. The prototype flew in 1935 and a total of 1094 aircraft produced.
