This HR skin represents the first ever chequered nose P51D Mustang to be Called "Big Beautiful Doll" flown by John David Landers. This aircraft was painted up, and first allocted to him, in FeB'45 when Landers was appointed the new group CO of the 78thFG. Much speculation and controversy has been made over the years about the correct colour scheme for this particular aircraft. In fact the colour scheme for this plane changed drastically on 3 separate occassions before it being given a completely new colour scheme with its transfer to the 361st FG in June '45.
This plane is noted for its different canopy name plate which is only B & R and which reads : 'Lt.Col.J.D.Landers' 3 months prior to his promotion to full Colonel. When he recieved this plane, there would have been his 3.5 kills missing from the his score tally (that he would subsequently get during his time with the 78th FG).....So with this skin, the 'tally' on the side of the plane has been changed to reflect this! Other notable features of this early version, are the lack of red cowling trim, chequered and coloured
wingtips, early rudder markings, and no outline to the small cowling plaque upon which his groundcrew's names were written. Please see rare picture of real plane with this zip.

This has the earier revised score tally on the fuselage as per the historical picture offered with this zip.

Though maybe not the most colourful of the 3 versions, it is an important plane, if only to serve as a more exacting historical reference for those seeking answers or clarification midst the minefield of other versions portrayed!

N.B.!! At this stage, I must point out that Salty's later May '45 version is also historicially accurate, and should be viewed as such for reference purposes!

3D Model: Chompy
Original pcx files: Salty
Skin: Col.J.D.Landers

This high resolution 3d model was borne out of the original many hours of effort that were put in by Chompey & Salty, and is basically a revision of that skin. Please respect the time and effort that they out into this creation. The model is freeware and is for the use of all within the EAW community. All that is asked of the community is to acknowledge the authors and give credit for the original 3d model and skin. It is yours to enjoy.

The original files for this HR were 6 months in the making, by Chompy and Salty, and I am proud to be able to bring you this High Resolution P-51 D Mustang off the back of their previous hard work. This aircraft is completely non mirrored with the equivalent of 512 x 512 textures. Using multi 3dz's has allowed the use of extra points and sub-elements to fix a few things that needed attention.

The following list hopefully summarizes the use and connection of each 3dz file:

Pp51dA.3dz - 3dz file for the left rear fuselage and tail.
Pp51dB.3dz - 3dz file for the right rear fuselage and tail.
Pp51dC.3dz - 3dz file for the cockpit.
Pp51dE.3dz - 3dz file for the right wing.
Pp51dF.3dz - 3dz file for the front fuselage, left and right.
Pp51dG.3dz - 3dz file for the left wing.
Pp51dH.3dz - 3dz file for the "Gunst type" transperant shadow.
Pp51dL.3dz - 3dz file for the left Torn Off Wing.
Pp51dM.3dz - 3dz file for the Medium Distance Model (actually the old Pp51df.3dz)

Pp51dmex.pcx/tpc - texture file for M, and S.3dz's (MDM and LDM)
Pp51dwng.pcx/tpc - texture file for U.3dz (Hires cockpit wingview)

While every attempt has been made to perfect this 3d model, there are some minor rendering sequence problems that were not overcome. It is hoped that some might take it upon themselves to correct these deficencies and improve upon what has already been accomplished.

Credits: - Big thank-you's go to -

- Claudio Wilches for HiRes cockpit.

- John 'Chompey' Masters for his great 3d modifying skills and his constant encouragement and enthusiasm for talking me through this project. He is a good and patient man, and at times I drove him nuts. This skin would NOT have been possible without him taking the time to step me through the minefield of issues that is the 'skinning world', and making it easy, comprehensive, and insightful enough to sustain my efforts when frustration stepped in. Thanks alot Chompy - Top Draw!!!

- Jeff Salter for providing the 512 x 512 textures you can only dream of, from which the original PCX's were built - thanks a million Jeff!

---------------------

The credits below are included in the spirit of the EAW community, in as much as these people weren't 'directly' involved in the creation of this skin, they were however, instrumental (through their previous efforts) with providing the foundations for it. For that alone they should be entered in this text.

- Alessandro Borges for his superb 3DZ Studio and Converter tools. They are the backbone that allows EAW to still stand tall after all these years.
- Cord Hartmann, for the original F.3dzs - now the M.3dz .
- Cord Hartmann for his 3DZ C.A.M. tutorial.
- Migge for his cockpit/guage textures which I modified.
- Moggy for sharing his notes. The "paste on 3dz's" info is at the core of these 3dzs.
- Mr. Johnson, Muas and Captain Kurt for their past offers of assistance with original files.
- Mosi for his great skinning tutorials. His techniques were used extensively in the creation of the original files.
- Captain Kurt for help with problems that arose along the way with the original files.
- Charles, Pobs and Andy for the idea of the transperant shadows.
- Peregrine for the idea of the "deflection cockpit"
- JWC 32 for his wide view cockpit.
