This skin represents the first P51D Mustang to be Called "Big Beautiful Doll" flown by Colonel John David Landers. 

Best known for his chequer nose later model version, flown with the 78thFG, this was the fisrt P51D to bear the name.

Allocated to him in May 1944 just prior to D-day, she was immediately painted in D-Day stripes.

The markings are a mixture of standard paint applications that were used as standard for the P38's that 38thFS had previously flown. As the U.S.A.A.F. adminstration had yet to finalise its new
sqdn colour coding structure of identification, no serial numbers were places on the tails, and in the case of the 38thFS, no invasion stripe was added to the upper tail surfaces.
The 38thFS was one of the first to be allocated to the new P51D-NA-5 models with bubble canopy, and these were originally produced with no dorsal fin support as with the early models, and had a rear view mirror.
Landers would be promoted from Captain to Lt. Col in this aircraft in just a few weeks, and the plane would stripped of its D-Day stipes, and then later transfered with him to the 357FG.

This version depicts the aircraft as it appeared when Landers was promoted to Major, and has the words "Pilot - Major J. D. Landers' painted on the left side of the fuselage,
between the wing root, and the kill score tally. Please historical photo of Landers and ground crew standing by the plane as a reference.

This high resolution 3d model was borne out of the original many hours of effort that were put in by Chompey & Salty, and is my first ever attempt at a skin. Please respect the time and effort that they out into this creation. The model is freeware and is for the use of all within the EAW community. All that is asked of the community is to acknowledge the authors and give credit for the original 3d model and skin. It is yours to enjoy.

The original files for this HR were 6 months in the making, by Chompy and Salty, and I am proud to be able to bring you this High Resolution P-51 D Mustang off the back of their previous hard work. This aircraft is completely non mirrored with the equivalent of 512 x 512 textures. Using multi 3dz's has allowed the use of extra points and sub-elements to fix a few things that needed attention.

While every attempt has been made to perfect this 3d model, there are some minor rendering sequence problems that were not overcome. It is hoped that some might take it upon themselves to correct these deficencies and improve upon what has already been accomplished.
