This skin represents the first P51D Mustang to be Called "Big Beautiful Doll" flown by Colonel John David Landers.

Best known for his chequer nose later model version, flown with the 78thFG, this was the fisrt P51D to bear the name.

Allocated to him in May 1944 just prior to D-day, she was immediately painted in D-Day stripes. Later these were removed as per this version.

NB. In the historical pictures included with this zip, you can see that the invasion stripes have been removed, and in the close side view of
the open cockpit, it is possible to discern where the black invasion stripe on the top of the wing once was. Also visible, is the 'cleaner' area
between the wing root, and the kill tally, were 'Pilot - Major J.D. Landers' was once pianted, having been removed due to his promotion to Lt.Col. The score
tally has been changed accordingly. The picture of the parked 'Doll' on a cloudy wet day, was taken within days of Lander's arrival at the 357th. Though not
clear due to B&W photography, the plane has already been given its new red and yellow nose markings, and 'Pilot - Lt. Col. J. D. Landers' has been added to the canopy, which is conspiquously missing in the earlier close up side shot from its 38thFS days.
Again, by looking at the nearest extended wheel housing, one can clearly make out where D-Day stripes were once painted. The photo is also interesting as the plane was obviously in mid
paint job at the time of the photo, as the fuselage designation markings still show the old 'CG-O' letters from the 38thFS, before being repainted 'B6-O' as per its new sqdn requirement! It also shows that
the earlier rearview mirror has been removed, as Landers was quoted to say that, "It messed with my forward arc of vision!"

The markings are a mixture of paint applications that were used as standard for the P38's that 38thFS had previously flown. As the U.S.A.A.F. adminstration had only just finalised its new
sqdn colour coding structure of identification, no serial number was places on the tail until it transfered to 357th, and given a red rudder, and in the case of the 38thFS, no invasion stripe was added to the upper tail surfaces.
The 38thFS was one of the first to be allocated to the new P51D-NA-5 models with bubble canopy, and these were originally produced with no dorsal fin support as with the early models.

To run, just drop all the files into your EAW folder, and away you go!

For OAW a 'Mypic' and 'contents' file has been included.

3D Model: Chompy
Original pcx files: Salty
Skin: Col.J.D.Landers

This high resolution 3d model was borne out of the original many hours of effort that were put in by Chompey & Salty, and is my first ever attempt at a skin. Please respect the time and effort that they out into this creation. The model is freeware and is for the use of all within the EAW community. All that is asked of the community is to acknowledge the authors and give credit for the original 3d model and skin. It is yours to enjoy.

The original files for this HR were 6 months in the making, by Chompy and Salty, and I am proud to be able to bring you this High Resolution P-51 D Mustang off the back of their previous hard work. This aircraft is completely non mirrored with the equivalent of 512 x 512 textures. Using multi 3dz's has allowed the use of extra points and sub-elements to fix a few things that needed attention.

The following list hopefully summarizes the use and connection of each 3dz file:

Pp51dA.3dz - 3dz file for the left rear fuselage and tail.
Pp51dB.3dz - 3dz file for the right rear fuselage and tail.
Pp51dC.3dz - 3dz file for the cockpit.
Pp51dE.3dz - 3dz file for the right wing.
Pp51dF.3dz - 3dz file for the front fuselage, left and right.
Pp51dG.3dz - 3dz file for the left wing.
Pp51dH.3dz - 3dz file for the "Gunst type" transperant shadow.
Pp51dL.3dz - 3dz file for the left Torn Off Wing.
Pp51dM.3dz - 3dz file for the Medium Distance Model (actually the old Pp51df.3dz)
Pp51dP.3dz - 3dz file for the prop.
Pp51dR.3dz - 3dz file for the right Torn Off Wing.
Pp51dS.3dz - 3dz file for the Long Distance Model
Pp51dU.3dz - 3dz file for the High res cockpit wingviews
Pp51dV.3dz - 3dz file for the left half of the "deflection cockpit".
Pp51dW.3dz - 3dz file for the right half of the "deflection cockpit"
Pp51dX.3dz - 3dz file for the cockpit instrument panel.
Pp51dY.3dz - 3dz file for the in cockpit Prop textures.

Pp51dfrt.pcx/tpc - texture file for F.3dz (Front fuselage)
Pp51dtex.pcx/tpc - texture file for C, H, P and Y.3dz's (c.pit, shadow, prop, cockpit prop)
Pp51dtra.pcx/tpc - transperancy info for the Pp51dtex.pcx/tpc
Pp51dlex.pcx/tpc - texture file for G.3dz (left wing), and L.3dz (Left TOW)
Pp51drex.pcx/tpc - texture file for E.3dz (right wing), and R.3dz (Right TOW)
Pp51dtll.pcx/tpc - texture file for A.3dz (left tail)
Pp51dtlr.pcx/tpc - texture file for B.3dz (right tail)
Pp51dmex.pcx/tpc - texture file for M, and S.3dz's (MDM and LDM)
Pp51dwng.pcx/tpc - texture file for U.3dz (Hires cockpit wingview)
Pp51dv.pcx/tpc - texture file for the cockpit interior
Pp51dvtr.pcx/tpc - transperancy info for the Pp51dv.pcx/tpc (Clear gunsight mod)
Pp51dx.pcx/tpc - texture file for the cockpit instruments

While every attempt has been made to perfect this 3d model, there are some minor rendering sequence problems that were not overcome. It is hoped that some might take it upon themselves to correct these deficencies and improve upon what has already been accomplished.

Credits: - Big thank-you's go to -

- Col. Gibbon for rear view 3DZ work.

- Claudio Wilches HiRes cockpit.

- John 'Chompey' Masters for his great 3d modifying skills and his constant encouragement and enthusiasm for talking me through this project. He is a good and patient man, and at times I drove him nuts. This skin would NOT have been possible without him taking the time to step me through the minefield of issues that is the 'skinning world', and making it easy, comprehensive, and insightful enough to sustain my efforts when frustration stepped in. Thanks alot Chompy - Top Draw!!!

- Jeff Salter for providing the 512 x 512 textures you can only dream of, from which the original PCX's were built - thanks a million Jeff!

---------------------

The credits below are included in the spirit of the EAW community, in as much as these people weren't 'directly' involved in the creation of this skin, they were however, instrumental (through their previous efforts) with providing the foundations for it. For that alone they should be entered in this text.

- Alessandro Borges for his superb 3DZ Studio and Converter tools. They are the backbone that allows EAW to still stand tall after all these years.
- Cord Hartmann, for the original F.3dzs - now the M.3dz .
- Cord Hartmann for his 3DZ C.A.M. tutorial.
- Migge for his cockpit/guage textures which I modified.
- Moggy for sharing his notes. The "paste on 3dz's" info is at the core of these 3dzs.
- Mr. Johnson, Muas and Captain Kurt for their past offers of assistance with original files.
- Mosi for his great skinning tutorials. His techniques were used extensively in the creation of the original files.
- Captain Kurt for help with problems that arose along the way with the original files.
- Charles, Pobs and Andy for the idea of the transperant shadows.
- Peregrine for the idea of the "deflection cockpit"
- JWC 32 for his wide view cockpit.

And finally, a special mention to Pobs, who (when Chompey was asleep across the pond!) put up with my 'spitting' when things were going right. Cheers PObs!

lastly, Thank you to the main man Mike 'Sandbagger' Norris for hosting the skin!.
