Addon for EUROPEAN AIR WAR - Microprose

Paulo Morais
28 April 1999 - Rev. B

INTRODUCTION

1942 Turning Point in Europe its an addon for European Air War from Microprose
that introduces a number of changes on the original data trying to model the
aircraft and actions that ocurred in that year of the war. Since EAW release
that I wondered why Microprose didn't modelled a continuous campaign starting
in this year to the end of the war as it was a year of great changes. In fact
this year saw events like the probing landings at Dieppe, a very fast rate of
replacment of aircraft with new versions in a continuous effort from both sides
to get a significant advantage, the first daylight raids by the 8th Air Force
and the start of a cross-channel offensive by the RAF.

This addon try to fill this gap in a simplified way. Due to limitations on EAW
original design it was necessary to replace the BOB campaign and all of their
specific aircraft to attain the initial objective of getting a continuous
campaign until the war end. A number of small changes to the other campaigns
were also introduced to model some aspects of the air war that can give more
variety and enjoyment to one the finest WWII aircombat simulation ever produced.

FEATURES

Replace the Battle of Britain Campaign with one starting in April of 1942. This
campaign is a slightly modified 1943 campaign, that can be taken into the
following years.
Squadrons available for the 1942 campaign:
	- German Initial Aircraft Replacements Main Mission
	II/Jagdgeschwader 1          Fw190A4     Bf109G6, Fw190A8  Intercept
	III/Jagdgeschwader 1         Bf109F4     Fw190A4, Bf109G6  Intercept
	II/Jagdgeschwader 2          Bf1094      Fw190A4, Bf109G6  Intercept/Sweep

	No. 610 Squadron Spitfire Vb Spitfire IXc Sweep/Escort

The type of missions, assigned aircraft, aircraft replacements and airbases of
these squadrons were modified to reasonably match historic accounts with the
exception of British 85th Squadron. The missions of this Mosquito equipped
Squadron were all performed by night, a part of the day not covered by EAW
modelling.

Add two squadrons for the 1943 German campaign:
	                             Initial Aircraft  Replacements Main Mission
	I/Schnellkampfgeschwader 10  Fw190A4 or A4/U8  Fw190F8      Bombing
	I/Zerstorergeschwader 76     Bf110G2 or G4     Me410A2 or A2/U2  Intercept

Two new squadrons for the 1944 German campaign
	                             Initial Aircraft  Replacements Main Mission
	II/Schlachtgeschwader 4      Fw190F8           nil          Bomb/Interdict
	I(Jagd)/Kampfgeschwader 54   Me262             nil          Bomb/Intercept
One new squadron for the 1944 American campaign
	                             Initial Aircraft  Replacements Main Mission
	358th Fighter Group (9thAF)  P47D              nil          Interdiction

Replace the following Battle of Britain specific aircraft:
	-German
	Bf 109E4    -> Bf 109F4
	Bf 110C     -> Fw 190A4
	- British
	Hurricane I -> Hurricane IIc
	Spitfire I  -> Spitfire Vb

to be used by the 1942 campaign. These aircraft can be flown in campaign and in
quick missions. Also the Stuka is replaced by the Fw 190F8 to be used in the
1944 German campaign. The Mosquito and Me410 are flyable in the 1942 British
and 1943 German campaigns. The Me262 is now capable of loading two 250 Kg bombs
to be used in one of the new 1944 german campaign squadrons.

Two new weapons are added. The AB250 cluster bomb dispenser for SD10 bomblets
and the PanzerBlitz 2 a R4M air to air rocket modified to be used by late war
Fw 190F8 in tank busting.

All the modified aircraft can carry bombs and other types of ordenance to reflect
their true capabilities and assigned missions. In campaign mode new weapons are
made available according with historic evidence. Otherwise there are no
limitations on weapon selection, with the exception of long campaigns were the
stockpile of certain weapons can be exhausted. The Fw 190A4 has a number of
loadouts options that were designed to reflect the capabilities of the
Fw 190A4/U8 version. A long range fighter bomber.

Included in the addon are a number of variations to some of the base and
modified aircraft that can be applied and removed at will by a mechanism
described later. The variations are:

	Hurricane IIc <-> Hurricane IIb
	Me 410A2      <-> Me 410A2/U2
	Bf 110G2      <-> Bf 110G4/R4
	Bf 109G6      <-> Bf 109G6/R6
	Bf 109K4      <-> Bf 109K6
	Fw 190A4      <-> Fw 190A4/U8
	Fw 190A8      <-> Fw 190A8/R2
	Fw 190A8      <-> Fw 190A8/R8

INSTALATION AND USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

To use this addon you need to have a full install of EAW (except the films)
patched to version 1.1 level.
To install just double-click the file 42TPE.EXE. A dialog box will ask you to
write the full path to the EAW folder. After that click the button labeled
Unzip. The main addon will be decompressed into a new folder named 42TPE.
Inside 42TPE folder it will be a file named install or install.bat. Please
double-click it. After this a lot of HD activity is natural as the bigger files
needed by the addon are being extracted from the CDF files to be patched. All
the original EAW data files are preserved. The installation procedure make a
backup of all existing files from previous addons (Like Charles Gunst ECA) to
preserve them for future usage. Then patches and copies the addon files to the
main EAW directory.

************************
Notes for advanced users:
========================
On instalation completion there will be 3 new folders inside 42TPE: BACKUP,
SOURCE and UTILS. Inside BACKUP are the files from others addons. SOURCE
includes all the source text files needed to implement the addon. UTILS
contain the latest versions of my developing tools needed to extract and patch
EAW data files.

This utilities can be used freely to help create new variants or just to take
a look inside EAW data files. By now no more usage instructions are available
other than the ones that are contained in a article at EAW Online Editing
Section (see URL at the bottom). This utilities are harmless but were designed
to be used by people with some programming experience. With the exception of
CDFRW.EXE (an interactive CDF file extractor) all are DOS based utilities.
SND2RAW and RAW2SND can be used to convert EAW sound files to RAW format and
back. X2F and F2X are floating point to hexadecimal converters. The rest are
data dumpers and patchers dedicated to specific tasks. A pair most usefull to
users of other languages versions of EAW is the one formed by DUMPSTR.EXE and
BUILDSTR.EXE a string file extractor and builder that allow customisation or
correction of translated items.
************************

Inside 42TPE folder there is a set of MSDOS batch files that will perform the
following functions (depending on Win9x configuration the file extension can
be hidden):
	DISABLE.BAT - double-clicking this file delete TPE files from EAW folder
                   and restores previous state from BACKUP folder.
	ENABLE.BAT - double-clicking this file reenable TPE addon.
Only one of this two files is present at a time to avoid data loss. They can be
used anytime to switch from TPE to other addons or to recover BOB aircraft and
campaigns. Other MSDOS batch files present are:

	ptc_19u8.bat	- Apply Fw190A4/U8 variant    Long range fighter/bomber
	ptc_19a4.bat	- Revert to modified Fw190A4

	ptc_19r2.bat	- Apply Fw190A8/R2 variant    Heavy interceptor (2x30mm)
	ptc_19r8.bat	- Apply Fw190A8/R8 variant Armoured (Sturm) interceptor
	ptc_190a.bat	- Revert to original Fw190A8

	ptc_19g6.bat	- Apply Bf109G6/R6 variant    Heavy interceptor (+2x20mm)
	ptc_109g.bat	- Revert to original Bf109G6

	ptc_19k6.bat	- Apply Bf109K6 variant       Heavy interceptor (+2x30mm)
	ptc_109k.bat	- Revert to original Bf109K4

	ptc_11g4.bat	- Apply Bf110G4/R4 variant    Heavy interceptor (+2x20mm)
	ptc_110g.bat	- Revert to modified Bf110G2

	ptc_hu2b.bat	- Apply Hurricane IIb variant 12x0.303 mg
	ptc_hu2c.bat	- Revert to modified Hurricane IIc 4x20mm

	ptc_m41u.BAT	- Apply Me410A2/U2 variant    Heavy interceptor (+4x20mm)
	ptc_m410.bat	- Revert to modified Me410A2

The following batch files are only used once to implement the main modifications
for the indicated aircraft. They can be used again to implement modifications/
updates made to the source files by advanced users or future addon patches.
	ptc_109f.bat   - Change Bf109E4 to Bf109F4
	ptc_19f8.bat   - Change Ju87B   to Fw190F8
	ptc_sp5b.bat - Change Spit Ia to Spit Vb
	ptc_mosq.bat - Change Mosquito BIV to flyable Mosquito FB VI
	ptc_262a.bat - Change Me262 to be able to carry bombs

To uninstall just run DISABLE.BAT to recover the state pre-addon next delete the
42TPE folder and subfolders.

If you want to install other addons (like ECA) after having installed 42TPE you
MUST temporarely disable the 42TPE addon by double-clicking DISABLE.BAT. After
the other addon installation you need to double-click REFRESH.BAT to update the
42TPE backup of your new files. This procedure also reenable 42TPE addon.

PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS

A number of problems and limitations are present. Some of them are due to
limitations of EAW others to a incomplete knowledge of EAW data files structure.
The most notable are:

For the aircraft that were made flyable (Mosquito and Me410) the view from the
cockpit is the best aproximation possible using elements from other aircraft. In
the Mosquito case I opted to use the wings and engines from the P38H as its the
only allied twin engined available. I'm sorry if someone get's disturbed by
seeing a star in a British airplane.

Some aircraft loads are invisible until released. This happens in those aircraft
that didn't carry any loads in the original simulation and use the same 3d
definition files (Hurricane and Me262).

The underwing gondola mounted guns in the Bf109G6/R6 are invisible until someone
find a way to change the 3d definition and texture files. Also this type of
weapon is a gun integral to the aircraft not a bomb or rocket that can be
selected in the loadout screen.

Selecting full guns when using the Hurricane IIb variant will give an inocuous
message saying 'out of ammo 0.303 machine guns' instead of '12 0.303 ....'.

From time to time in campaign mode is possible to get assigned a mission a
little odd for the type of aircraft used.

All the flight model changes were made based on historic evidence when
available. Other aspects like general aerodinamic behaviour were changed based
on the values from similar aircraft variants present and subjective
interpretation of written accounts.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank in a chronological order to:
