Finnish bf 109 G-2 Wing view set

During WW2 Finnish airforce used 48 Messerschmitt bf 109 G-2 type of planes. In December 1942 agreement was made with Germany that allowed Finland to buy one squadron of planes (30 piece). First set of 16 planes arrived in Finland 13.3.1943. The planes were brand new and finnish national markings were painted on them and they were given numbers MT-201 - MT-216. The next set of planes arrived in Finland 16.5.1943 and they were given numbers MT-217 - MT-230. One of the aircrafts, MT-226 was damaged and left in Germany.

The planes of this latter set were primary repaired. According to the contract the combat losses were to be replaced by new aircraft. The replacement planes were delivered from Feld Luft Park situated in the town of Pori (german airforce maintenance base). Three planes were delivered 9.8.1943, numbers given MT-231 - 233, 2.9. MT-234, 11.11. MT-235 and MT-236, 5.1.1944 three planes MT-237 - 239, 21.2. MT-226, 6.3. five planes MT-240 - 244, 21.3. two planes MT-245 ja MT-246, 27.4. MT-247 and the last G-2 type plane MT-248 1.6.1944.

Some of the 16.5. arrived planes of the second part had G-3/4 type wing bulges even though the planes were of type G-2. Apparently some of the primary repaired planes had been assembled of parts originating from different planes, resulting kind of hybrids. Wing bulges have been seen in planes MT-221-222-225-227 and 242.

The planes had, when arriving in Finland, a german three gray camouflage RLM 74,75,76. In Finland the german markings were overpainted with dark and semidark grey and the planes were given finnish national markings and yellow eastern front markings.

Primary repaired planes of the second part and some of the planes delivered from Feld Luft Park had upper surface overpainted during the repair work with RLM 74, old colouring shows vaguely. This upper wing pattern can be seen also in some of the planes from other sets.

The planes primary repaired in Finland were given finnish DN pattern, upper surface : black and olive green (F.S 34096) lower surface: blue grey (F.S 35414).

Spinner white and RLM 70, prop blades RLM 70 with yellow tip

Finnish national markings were at the beginning: blue swastika on white, the size in the fuselage and upper wing 75 cm and 100 cm diameter on the under surface of the wing. According to the order given in 12.1.1944 upper wing surface were given national markings, 100 cm diameter, and the white part was darkened with light grey (for low visibility).

I have studied differents sources tens of fotographs and made the wing painting schemes based on them. This paint set is therefore also a historical study. The set consists of twelve different wing painting patterns for finnish G-2 planes.

MT-207 (primary repair camo RLM 74)
MT-208 (finnish DN pattern, hybrid plane)
MT-209 (RLM 74,75,76 camo)
MT-213 (finnish DN pattern)
MT-216 (RLM 74,75,76 camo)
MT-221 (finnish DN pattern, but RLM 74,75 wing tip from other aircraft, hybrid plane)
MT-222 (primary repair camo RLM 74, the plane of finnish top ace Ilmari ''Illu'' Juutilainen, hybrid plane)
MT-225, 227 (primary repair camo RLM 74, hybrid plane)
