Junkers Ju 52/3m g4e, code 22-99,
Grupo de Bombardeo Nocturno 2-G-22
1a Escuadra (1a Brigada Hispana)
Spanish Civil War 1937

=============================================================================================================================

The Junkers design Ju 52/3m, i.e. the trimotor version of this cargo and transport plane - the original design Ju 52/1m had a single central engine - participated in the Spanish Civil War from the very beginning in the last days of July 1936. The Spanish Navy loyally taking sides of the Republican cause, Hitlers first twenty "Tante Jus" helped Francos reinforcement troups to leave the African continent in Morocco to assist the fascist uprise in the Spanish motherland.

Thus the Ju 52/3m flew in the Spanish War even before the Legion Condor arrived in Mid-November 1936. Originally being designed as a cargo transport and a civil air liner the further development of the war saw this plane converted as a makeshift bomber. From the beginning being successful in this role the Ju 52/3m served throughout the whole war, officially starting with K/88 (Bombergroup 88) in Nov 15, 1936.

Having participated in the infamous raid on the Basque town of Guernica in April 26th, 1937, the faster and more advanced He 111 and Do 17 variants gradually took over the bomber role from the rapidly ageing Ju 52 bomber. The surplus machines were subsequently handed over to Spanish units. From March 37 onwards the Junkers was used more and more for nocturnal raids and transport duties, the role this plane fulfilled for the Luftwaffe thoughout WW2.

The variants used in the Civil War were the Ju 52/3m g3e and the Ju 52/3m g4e, the latter being easily distinguishable by a tail wheel instead of the tail skid. The Ju 52 stayed in Spanish service throughout the wartime, a number of 170 additional examples being built in Spain under license under the designation CASA 352. Those were in official use by the Spanish Airforce until 1954. Many of the preserved Ju 52s are Spanish-built CASA 352s.

The first Ju 52s having arrived in Spain retained the overall greenish-grey RLM 63 finish, but this was soon replaced by the then-standard Luftwaffe camouflage system of dark brown RLM 61, medium green RLM 62 and pale grey RLM 63 on the upper surfaces, pale blue RLM 65 beneath. (This system was followed by the well-known later RLM 70/71 green tones. Interestingly some of those colours were later in 1943 successfully tested with JG 54 on the Eastern front, officially reappearing as ground-concealing colours RLM 81/82 towards the end of the war). "22 - 99" is shown being painted according to this system, "2x" meaning a bomber plane, "22" significating the Ju 52 type and "99" standing for the 99th "Tante Ju" delivered to Spain.

Ju 52/3m g3e - auxiliary bomber with BMW 132 A engines, amachine gun compartment on the upper fuselage (MG 15), upward-folding bottom gun-gondola (MG 15) and a payload of 1,500kg of bombs
Ju 52/3m g4e - multi-role transport aircraft with BMW 132 A engines and cargo doors on the upper fuselage and right side; floats could be attached instead of the landing gear

The new upper surface skin was made and adjusted by me, for the lower surface I used Jan Tumas skin and added the appropriate maintenance hatches and additional paneling

This skin is meant to replace the Ju 52 in the Spanish Air War scenario, using the m410 slot. Unfortunately the 3dz is not quite correct because the ventral gun bay, the so-called "dust-bin" MG station is missing as well as the characteristic wheel spats of this early variant. Some rendering sequence problems occur on the starboard side of the fuselage in connection with the cargo door and the code area. Maybe some helpful soul is able to put this right!

I created two filesets - an OAW - compatible set "A-21-m410" and a set "SAW". For the Spanish Air War scenario simply unzip the contents of this set into your SAW directory. Do the same for your QAW installation, but use the A-21 set.

Thanks to Pobs for his assistance! Thx also to the others whose work I have used to complete this skin.

Enjoy!

OVERVIEW

Here comes the first three-engined aircraft for the WWII flight-simulation "European Air War" by MicroProse:
The German multi-purpose transport aircraft Junkers Ju-52/3m "Tante Ju".

The aircraft uses an all-new 3D model that I constructed in collaboration with Paulo Morais.

The texture skin represents a Ju-52/3m version g7e of KGzbV 1. The current skin is a provisional one that I built the model with.

=========================================
INSTALLATION

To install, simply copy all 3DZ and TPC files from the ZIP archive into your EAW main directory.
To un-install, delete the same files from your EAW main directory again.

To get the correct aircraft label, flight model and armament settings it is recommended to use the "Enemy Coast Ahead (ECA)" and "ECA Panel" add-ons by Charles Gunst (the current versions were ECA v1.4 and ECA Panel v3.6 when this aircraft was released). You will also be able to fly this aircraft manually in pilot careers then. Be sure to properly install these add-ons BEFORE you install the Ju-52/3m.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Thanks for the helping comments of Paulo Morais, Enrique "Capitn Manduca" Garcia, "Alatriste" and "Geo" on 3DZ editing issues.

Parts of the two-bladed propellers were made possible by intense study of a propeller 3DZ file by Jean "JPI" Pigeon and I therefore owe him Thanks for his pioneer work on that issue.

Special Thanks to Alessandro Borges - his Tools "3DZ!Studio" and "3DZ!Converter" were used for the construction of the 3D model.

Last but not least I'd like to send some Special Greetings to my Swiss colleague Christian "Mosi" Mosimann, who did an excellent job creating more texture skins and once again Greetings to Paulo Morais in Portugal, who was able to eliminate most of the Rendering Sequence bugs of the 3D model.

=========================================
DEDICATION

I would like to dedicate this work to my Grandfather Gerhard, whose life was once saved by the good, old "Tante Ju" in the Mediterranean.

COMMENTS AND CONTACT ADDRESS

You are free to edit the included PCX files to paint different texture skins (please remember to mention the original author in your credits if you base your modifications on his paintwork).

Further refinements of the 3D model for example to get other Ju-52 versions or a proper two-seat Virtual Cockpit are also welcome - please contact me if you need further information or if you have problems with the file templates provided herein.
Again, I'd like to ask you to credit Paulo Morais and myself for the original 3D model construction - after all it took us about six months of work to accomplish this...

Have fun with the "Tante Ju"!

Hungarian Ju-52/SM-79 (until we have a better one!)

I repainted the beautiful "Drab camo" Ju-52 to double as either a Ju-52
or a SM-79 (for now...). PCX files enclosed! Have fun and improve it.
Thanks to Cord and Mosi for a great job! The serials represent the
actual Hungarian Ju 52 serials which were "S" and started with the number
201...I atttempted to "mirror" them using Mosi and Cord's 3dz/skin
templates.
