Heinkel He111H-2, white "E", "5J + ER"
of 7./KG 4 "General Wever"
Libya spring 1942

Desert version

This plane is some kind of mystery. The profile was taken from Ospreys "Luftwaffe Colour Schemes and Markings 1935 - 45", Martin Windrow, Canterbury UK 1971. Photos exist of a captured wrecked He 11H "5J + ER" in the Western Desert, but in standard RLM 70/71 splinter camouflage. The plane is showing a white tailband in RLM 21 just in front of the tail, but apparently an overpainted yellow tailband with RLM 70 schwarzgrn (black green) or 80 olivgrn (olive green). Originally being stationed at the Eastern front, II./KG 4 was transferred to Lecce and San Pancrazio (near Brindisi) in Southern Italy in October 1942 to stay there until December 1942.

Pictures of operational He 111 in plain desert camouflage are rather rare. So I chose to keep the camo in RLM 78 hellblau (light blue) and RLM 79 sandgelb (sand yellow).

Thanks also to LLv34_Doc for providing me with additional profiles and photographs and of course to the original skinners and modders of this plane.

Have fun!
