1940 BATTLE OF BRITAIN
======================

Version 2.1 : 22 March 2002
===========

The Blenheim should now appear much less frequent in the Luftwaffe campaign. Its armor values
are lowered. The original ECA Panel values gave it B-26 armor, I gave it He 111 armor values
in verion 2.0 and for this version 2.1 it received even lower Do 17 armor values.
Now that the Blenheim appears much less, the Defiant should have a higher probability to
appear.

The Defiant flight model is adapted : I gave it a higher and more accurate weight
(Spitfire 14) combined with the Ju 87 Stuka flight model. So it shouldn't behave as a F-16
any longer. The Defiant now standard only has the 4 defensive guns, tweaked by Andy, and
no offensive guns as this is how it was in reality.

Appearance of Blenheim and Defiant in a campaign is not guaranteed.

Version 2.0 : 24 December 2001
===========

Choosing a normal campaign you will fly a mission every 2 days for a total of 30-35 missions.

Inclusion of new aircraft : Boulton-Paul Defiant Mk. I, Bristol Blenheim Mk. IVF. These
British interceptors can be flown in a British campaign and may be encountered in a German
campaign.

Inclusion of Do 17Z-2 'low level' variant next to the normal medium altitude Do 17Z-2
already present in the previous versions. The Ju 88A-1 level bomber variant is included next
to the already present Ju 88A-5. The Ju 88A-1 (the original EAW Ju 88A) remains in formation
when under fire, because aerobatics were prohibited in this Ju 88 version. The Ju 88A-5
shows dive bomber behaviour with (violent) evasive action when under fire (this is realistic)
and enters a shallow dive in its bombing run. The Ju 88A-5 is rather hard to catch, but
also can suffer heavy losses when caught.

To prevent what the makers of the ECA Online flight models called "Shot off tail syndrome"
I applied their solution : doubling the tail hit points while halving the tail hit bubble
size, both for fighters and bombers.

The great Rendermod by Max188 is applied so that planes retain better visibility over larger
distances.

The fuel burn rate is 1.5 (in the original EAW it is 1.0). Completely correct fuel burn rate
would be 2.0, but this leads to major problems with computer controlled planes as they cannot
conserve their fuel. The value 1.5 leads to nice dropping fuel gauges while on mission, but
retaining enough fuel reserve to reach your homebase safely. Warning for Bf 109E pilots :
your combat radius is 280 km, the distance to London is 270 km. So keep a look on your fuel
gauges. Using Alt-N also conserves fuel. The value 1.75 could not be used in the British
campaign because this caused German bombers to be unescorted.

German bombers fly faster than in the original campaign. Fighters still have higher speed,
but if you use Alt-N while flying for the RAF you will not be in a very good intercept
position and will probably only catch the bombers when they are already in their final bombing
run. This will not prevent the bombers from dropping all their bombs on target. Ofcourse you
still can make them pay heavily for their destructive behaviour when they are egressing.

I think that this new version is more challenging for the RAF and easier for the Luftwaffe.
The Luftwaffe still can have challenging battle by using PlanesGR.dat (rename to Planes.dat).

Version 1.1 : 28 June 2001
===========

Updated Planes.dat and *.flt files for the new Battle of Britain campaign/addon.

In the original addon the armament difference between the Bf 109E-3 and Bf 109E-4 was
a MG-FF 20 mm cannon firing through the propeller hub in the Bf 109E-3 and not in the E-4.

This was not historically correct.

The Bf 109E-3 had provisions for the installation of an MG-FF cannon between the powerplant's
cylinders. Problems of jamming, overheating and vibration, however, plagued this modification,
and most of the installations were either removed in the field, or seldom used.
Because of the apparent failure of the nose-mounted MG-FF cannon, and its subsequent removal
after installation, it was decided to produce the E-3 without the center-firing weapon.
The result was the designation change to Bf 109E-4.

I adapted the files to the following values :

The Bf 109E-3 and E-4 both carry two MG17 with 1000 rounds each in the nose and a 20 mm
cannon with 60 rounds each in each wing.

The E-3 carries the 20 mm MG-FF and the E-4 carries the improved 20 mm MG-FF/M.

Characteristics based on Charles Gunst's EAW Edit notes :

Rate of fire (rounds/sec)	Muzzle velocity (feet/sec)

MG-FF 6,667 1870
MG-FF/M 8,667 2263

Version 1.0 : 25 May 2001
===========

The 1940 Battle of Britain campaign replaces the original 1940 BOB campaign in EAW.

New features in this updated 1940 Battle of Britain campaign :

1. Each Staffel and Squadron occupies a dedicated EAW plane slot.
2. So this campaign comes with its own PLANES.DAT and *.FLT files that define each plane
   in its own new slot.
All flight models and plane characteristics are based on ECA Panel by Charles Gunst.
The following modifications to the ECA Panel data were made using Jeroen van Soest's
EAW Aircraft Edit 1.08 utility : the MG17 7,7 mm defensive guns of the German bombers
were given the same historically correct rate of fire, muzzle velocity and range as the
offensive MG17 on the German Bf 109E and Bf 110C fighters. The original EAW and ECA Panel
values gave these defensive guns much lower rate of fire, muzzle velocity and range than
   in reality.
To compensate for these more powerful defensive guns I adapted the accuracy by changing
the dispersion factor. ECA Panel uses a dispersion of 2,5 and this is rather accurate.
I changed the dispersion to values based on research by Jim Hume :
flexible nose MG 4 - ventral front MG 4,5 - ventral rear MG 2,5 (cfr tail gun) -
rear pointing MG 3,5 (cfr top turret) - waist guns 6.
While reading a book on the BOB I noticed that during the battle additional guns were
installed on the Do-17 and Ju-88 to compensate for the apparent low defensive fire power
and to overcome gun loading problems in the heat of the battle. So the Do-17 and Ju-88
now also carry a defensive waist MG on each side of the cockpit beside the standard
flexible nose, ventral and dorsal rear MGs to a total of 5 instead of 3 MGs.
3. Because each plane occupies its own slot it is possible to assign a different and correct
   plane skin to each unit.
Therefore this campaign also comes with a skinpack for each plane in its own slot.
I would like to thank Julio Junqueira who designed all the skins of the Bf-109Es in
the skinpack especially for this campaign. The Bf-110s are made by Serb, the Ju-87, Ju-88
and basic camouflage of the Do-17 are made by Mosi adapted by Ghostboy. The He-111 is made
by Migge, Alessandro Borges and Ghostboy.
The Hurricane and Spitfire skins are based on skins by Flying Sheep, Migge, Mosi and
Paddy_EAF331 that I gave new insignia and were made non mirrored by Muas. The Defiant is
made by the firm and the Blenheim is from the hand of Captain Kurt.
4. New planes are introduced that were not available in the original campaign :
Do 17Z-2, Bf 109E-3, Bf 109E-4/B and Spitfire Ib.
Other planes available and also available in the original campaign are : Hurricane I,
   Spitfire Ia, Bf 109E-4, Bf 110C-4, Ju 87B-2, He 111H-2, Ju 88A-5.
5. A new mainscreen and correct German Gruppe emblems in the campaign unit selection screens
by the hand of your humble servant.
The hangar screens are from the original game, but because of the slot multiplication I
had to disable the moving sprites in eg the American hangar screens. To obtain this I
used files made for this purpose I found in a hangar screen pack by -E. The sprite
disabling files were also made by -E.
The single mission screens are made by Knug. He also provided the Defiant and Blenheim hangar.

When you play this campaign DO NOT select Limited Supply or you may not have bombs to carry.
I would like to quote Charles Gunst on this : "Did you join up to be a fighter pilot or
a supply clerk anyway?" :)

Installation :
============

You need EAW installed and patched to 1.1, 1.2 or 1.2a level. I recommend 1.2a because of
more aggressive AI using 20 mm cannons, spinning aircraft and better sound effects.
The more capable defensive guns on the German bombers compensate IMHO more or less the
more aggressive interceptors.

Enemy Coast Ahead 1.4 (ECA 1.4) by Charles Gunst needs to be installed first. Do NOT
use ECA Panel with this addon.

Most simple is a separate install and copying of all the files directly into your EAW
directory.

A more elaborate way is to switch the files in and out your EAW directory using
either EAW Stab or Skins 'n' More. For explanation about setup and use of these utilities
I would like to refer to their respective readme files.

The following .zips come with the new 1940 BOB campaign :

Readme.zip contains this Readme.txt file.

Campaign.zip contains elementary the campaign files.

Hangars.zip contains the hangar screens : hngr*.mpc

Outside.zip contains the 'forward airfield' outside screens : outsid*.mpc

Flight.zip contains Planes.dat and the flight model *.flt files.

German.zip contains the German skin pack

British.zip contains the British skin pack

Speech.zip contains .snd files that remove all pilot exclamations that refer to Mustangs,
American fighters, FW-190s and long nosed 190s and replace these with with other appropriate
exclamations.

Sprites.zip contains the sprite disabling files needed with the Hangar & Outside screens : *.wsp
