Version 1.1 : 26 December 2001
===========

The dispersion factor of the defensive guns on bombers was fixed on 4.0 in version 1.0.
I changed the dispersion to values based on research by Jim Hume : flexible nose MG 4 -
ventral front MG 4,5 - ventral rear MG 2,5 (cfr tail gun) - rear pointing MG 3,5 (cfr top turret)
- waist guns 6. These are also the values used in the Battle of Britain, 1944 Ardennes and
1941-1942 Desert Air war.

To prevent what the makers of the ECA Online flight models called "Shot off tail syndrome"
I applied their solution : doubling the tail hit points while halving the tail hit bubble
size, both for fighters and bombers.

The great Rendermod by Max188 is applied so that planes retain better visibility over larger
distances.

The fuel burn rate is 1.5 (in the original EAW it is 1.0). Completely correct fuel burn rate
would be 2.0, but this leads to major problems with computer controlled planes as they cannot
conserve their fuel. The value 1.5 leads to nice dropping fuel gauges while on mission, but
retaining enough fuel reserve to reach your homebase safely.

Version 1.0 : 2 May 2001
===========

This campaign is a combination of :

1942 TURNING POINT IN EUROPE by Paulo Morais and the modified 1943-1945 ETO campaign by Emil.

The following part of the readme is a synthesis of the readme's of the older addons.

1942 Turning Point in Europe is an addon for European Air War from Microprose that introduces
a number of changes on the original data trying to model the aircraft and actions that ocurred
in that year of the war. Since EAW was released I wondered why Microprose didn't model a continuous
campaign starting in 1942 advancing to the end of the war. 1942 was a year of great changes, in
fact this year saw events like the probing landings at Dieppe, a very fast rate of replacment of
aircraft with new versions in a continuous effort from both sides to get a significant advantage,
the first daylight raids by the 8th Air Force and the start of a cross-channel offensive by the RAF.

This addon tries to fill this gap in a simplified way. Due to limitations on the original design
of EAW it was necessary to replace the BOB campaign and all of their specific aircraft to attain
the initial objective of getting a continuous campaign starting in 1942 until the war's end.
A number of changes to the other campaigns were also introduced to model some aspects of the air
war that can give more variety and enjoyment to one the finest WWII aircombat simulation ever
produced.

Paulo Morais

The 1943-1945 ETO Campaign replaces the 1943 and 1944 Campaigns of the original European Air War.
This new addon gives you altered 1943 and 1944 campaigns for American, British and German squadrons.
In the original 1943 and 1944 campaigns the type of missions were not varied. As American or British
pilot you flew mainly endless escort or sweep missions respectively and as German pilot you flew
mainly endless intercept missions. The sporadic exception to this mission rule was so rare that I
(and I suppose you too) became very much bored after a while and never finished a complete 1943 or
1944 campaign.

I changed the Sq****.dat, Camp****.dat and Misn**.dat files of the original 1943 and 1944 campaigns
to provide you with a varied mission probability. EAW knows five types of missions: escort, sweep,
bomb, intercept and interdict. I changed the files so that you should be ordered these types of
missions in a more varied way. Remark for bombing missions: your airbase should be within flying
range of bombable targets. Remark for the German campaign : you will still be asked to fly mainly
intercept missions, but the bombers you encounter won't allways be B-17s, but also a lot of B-24s,
B-26s and others.

FEATURES
--------

The Battle of Britain campaign is replaced with a campaign one starting in April of 1942.
This campaign will continue through 1943 and 1944 untill the end of World War II.

I had to move the FW-190 A4 from the Bf-110 C4 slot to the Ju-87 Stuka slot to cure persisting
crashes to desktop. Now that the FW-190 A4 resides in the Ju-87 slot, I had to leave out the
FW-190 F8 (and the two Geschwader that flew it : one in 1943 and one in 1944) that originally
occupied the Ju-87 slot in 1942TPE.

REMARK ON ECA PANEL COMPATIBILITY
---------------------------------

The following Battle of Britain specific aircraft were replaced to be used in the 1942 campaign:

	Bf-109 E4    ->   Bf-109 F4
	Ju-87        ->   Fw-190 A4
	Spitfire I   ->	  Spitfire Vb

All other aircraft occupy their original slots as used in ECA Panel.

This means that the 1942 part of the campaign is NOT ECA Panel compatible. If you use ECA Panel
in 1942 the original aircraft that occupy the Bf-109E and Ju-87 slot in ECA Panel will reappear.
This means that the Bf-109F4 will be replaced by a Bf-109E variant or the Bf-109F2, a change that is
not that serious. The ECA Panel Bf-109F2 has exactly the same characteristics except for a weaker
wing damage value of 33 instead of 36 for the F4. But also that the FW-190A4 will be replaced by
the Ju-87. And the Stuka isn't a very good fighter aircraft. However this may be cured by choosing
another real fighter for your Geschwader with the unit managing part of ECA Panel or EAW Pilot
(EAW Campaign Editor 1.0) an old precursor of ECA Panel, also written by Charles Gunst.

Since ECA Panel does not overwrite any of the CAMPAIGN files of the 1943 and 1944 campaigns, you can use
ECA Panel in the 1943 and 1944 campaigns, but with the following considerations.

The following files WILL BE OVERWRITTEN by ECA Panel in the 1942 campaign AND in the 1943 and 1944
campaigns :

PLANES.DAT	)
*.FLT ) These files were adapted by me to give you the Bf-109 F4 in the Bf-109 E slot and
			the FW-190 A4 in the Ju-87 slot.

In these files the defensive armament of the bombers was tried to be made more
realistic. The B-26, B-24 and B-17 bombers in ECA Panel are equipped with .303 guns
where they historically carried .50 defensive guns. I gave them the MG they
			historically were equipped with.

In ECA Panel the rate of fire, muzzle velocity and range of all the defensive guns
is much lower than that of the same weapons mounted in offensive positions on the
fighters. For the Allied and German planes a .303/7 mm or .50/13 mm MG was the same
if it was placed in a defensive or offensive position. I gave the defensive guns on
Allied and German bombers/attack aircraft the same muzzle velocity, rate of fire and
range as the offensive guns. I used the data present in Charles Gunst's EAW Edit notes.

To compensate for the greater range, rate of fire and muzzle velocity I made the
defensive fire less accurate : the dispersion value in ECA Panel is 2,5 and this is
rather accurate. I changed the dispersion to values based on research by Jim Hume :
flexible nose MG 4 - ventral front MG 4,5 - ventral rear MG 2,5 (cfr tail gun) -
rear pointing MG 3,5 (cfr top turret) - waist guns 6. This means that you will survive
high speed passes, but do not try to fly formation with the bomber stream.

SO IF YOU USE ECA PANEL THE BF-109 F4 AND FW-190 A4 WILL BE LOST, BUT CAN BE REPLACED
AS ALREADY WRITTEN HIGHER USING THE UNIT MANAGING PART OF ECA PANEL OR EAW PILOT.

ANOTHER EFFECT IS THAT THE DEFENSIVE GUN CHARACTERISTICS ARE CHANGED TO THE ECA PANEL
VALUES BOTH FOR TYPE OF GUN AS FOR RATE OF FIRE, MUZZLE VELOCITY AND RANGE. No other
			strange effects will occur.

LOADOUT.DAT	)
WEAPONS.DAT	)
WEAPONS.STR	)	These files are the original 1942TPE files and describe different loadouts and their
characteristics. If you use ECA Panel they will be replaced by new ECA Panel files.

PICPLNA.MNU	)
PICPLNB.MNU	)
PICPLNG.MNU	)
PNAMES.STR	)	These files describe the plane names both in single missions and campaigns and ofcourse
will and should be adapted with the use of different aircraft variants via ECA Panel.

BRIEFING.STR	)
RADIOTXT.STR	)	Radio, briefing and campaign messages specific for the western front. The use of ECA Panel
			doesn't matter for these files.

INCLUDED PLANES
---------------

To be able to start flying quickly I included two skins for the non ECA Panel compatible slots :
a Bf 109F-4 JG 2 an original 1942TPE skin by Paulo Morais for the Bf-109E slot, a FW 190A-4 1./JG1
by Migge for the Ju-87 slot and a Spitfire LF.Vb by Mosi.
