This aircraft represents a Spitfire Mk.Vc, flown by Sqn Ldr Eric Gibbs, No. 54 Sqn Royal Australian Air Force, during July 1943.

Delivered to the RAF in June 1942, this aircraft was shipped to Australia on the freighter SS Hopenridge, arriving in October 1942. Following re-assembly, it was allocated to No. 54 Sqn, and more specifically the unit's C.O. Sqn Ldr Eric Gibbs. An ex-Hudson pilot with Coastal Command's No. 608 Sqn, Gibbs seemed an unusual choice to lead a single engine fighter squadron, but his lack of experience in this role failed to impede himin his daunting task . He duly became No. 54 Sqn's leading Ace in Australia with 5 and 1 shared kills and 5 damaged. All of these claims (his only confirmed victories of the war) were scored in this particular aircraft between March and July 1943, and consisted of Zero fighters and "Betty" bombers.
